Years ago in 1996 I was at the Eno River 4th of July festival. I always try to buy some thing unique and hand made. That is the place to find it. So I came home with a hand cut leather belt with a unique brass hand made buckle. That became my go to belt and I wore it daily for well over ten years.
It barely showed any wear. The problem was I would throw my cloths on the floor on my way to bed and eventually stepped on it and bent the flange. It eventually was going to brake and I had to be really careful with it.
Years past by and we were down at the Sanford pottery festival in 2012. I saw a similar display of belts and started to admire them. I flipped the buckle over and the same insignia was on the back, same as mine. I discussed the situation over with the owner of the display. That is when Max introduced himself and was amazed that he had sold that belt to me at the Eno. The date on the stamp was '96. That's 1996!
So he said give to me and I'll take care of it. So I took the belt off and remove the buckle with two screws. "How much is it gonna cost me??" .... Nothing. Those belts are guaranteed for life.
So why am I writing this right now you ask? Max called me last night and he is in town for the Cary Lazy Days. AND he has my buckle. I just picked it up. Fixed cleaned and shined up as good as new. Now that is customer service like it was in a by gone day.
This belt was the purchase of a life time. And it will last a life time. Almost like buying a cast iron skillet. Yours for a lifetime.
So if you see a man selling leather belts with shiny brass buckles give him a try. He will be on the street in front of the library and tell him superNC says Hi. He doesn't know who superNC is but I think he'll get the message.
Nice!! I wish I had thought about local craftsmen when I bought my last leather belt. I'll have to look for this guy next time we hit a festival. I'm also in need of another leather checkbook holder. Thanks for sharing this story.
I realize that the description of belt buckle could mean any thing from a cowboy's belt in Texas to a WWF wrestling match belt. So I took a picture. It's more of a casual white pants belt thing.
