OP, I am a transplant with a child starting in Wake County schools tomorrow. I understand your concern and your post was in no way offensive. When you live somewhere else and are reading things on this board it only gives you part of the picture because generally the bad is what people are complaining about not many write about the good stuff. I too get worried when I hear of good teachers leaving or that class sizes are large. There is nothing wrong with being concerned that your child is getting a good education.

In my opinion there are 2 big concerns for WCPSS. The first is rapid growth the second is our current elected officials. With respect to the rapid growth, the problem is over crowding and large class sizes. From what I have been told this seems to really be a bigger issue in high growth areas (western wake) I would like to tell you the positive too. Next year 3 new schools will be opening and the board is looking to convert some school to a multi track year round system to accommodate more kids, thus reducing crowding. A large bond was approved by voters last year that funds the construction of the 3 schools opening next year and about 14 more. I am hoping this reduces class sizes in our assigned schools.

As for concern 2, our elected officials. If you value a good education then when you get here, do not forget to register to vote. It is time for all of us frustrated, concerned, mad (insert your adjective here) parents to let our current legislature know that we do not approve of the decisions they have made and we want more funding for education. This will still be important when you get here a year from now.

We relocated from one of those "exclusive" North Shore school districts on Long Island back in 2007 with a 6th and 2nd grader. My advice, which is based entirely on my personal experience, is that the schools are a non-issue. There's been an occasional threat of reassignment, which is a much bigger issue in the rapidly expanding areas (e.g. Morrisville, Cary, etc.), but it never materialized for us. And we've grown really fond of many of the teachers who have helped shape our children.

My oldest son just started college (another huge benefit of living in North Carolina - very affordable in-state tuition) and has made a strong and impassioned argument that he gained an advantage by our relocating when we did.
