My husband and I may be moving to Raleigh for a job opportunity. I'd be working in downtown Raleigh. He would be working for work (preferably law enforcement). We like historic neighborhoods that are safe and are walkable to shops or restaurants. Safety is pretty important. We travel a lot so I don't want to come home to a busted in door and all our stuff gone. I know zilch about Raleigh (beyond names--Cary, Durham, Chapel Hill, etc.) We currently live in the Greenville, SC area.
Any suggestions? We're in our early thirties, no kids yet (probably soon though). We'd have to rent to start and I'd prefer to keep it under $1000/month (if that's even possible). I've cruised Craigs List and seem to be getting nothing but highrises and apartment complexes.

historic, safe, walkable, centrally located.... all will cost you for rent. 1k is not likely to be a reasonable amount to pay. It costs that much to live in an 2 BR apartment with little to no character nearby the areas you describe.

a 2 br/1BA post-war "townhouse) in Cameron Village - which is as good as you will get to what you want - is currently running $,1200-1,300/month. May go down at the 2 new high-rises fill out (at higher prices), but that's what it is now.
There are some great historic neighborhoods in Raleigh Oakwood, Mordecai, Boylean Heights, Cameron Village, Five Points. Etc.... But as others have pointed out rents are typically higher than what your stated budget is. Living in downtown Raleigh has its perks, but it is pricey!

Unless you are getting a good raise, Raleigh will cost more to live in. According to my favorite cost-of-living calculator, Raleigh is about 8% more expensive than Greenville, SC. However, the housing is 46% more expensive.
Perhaps you need an on-the-ground visit to decide whether Raleigh is worth it. I have heard that Greenville is a pretty nice place for a city its size, and it has a great downtown.

Argh. Not cool.
We actually live in a small town (about 10,000) roughly 10 miles from Downtown Greenville. We can't afford to live right downtown as the rents are pretty high too. Our little town has a happening downtown with restaurants. We live three blocks away so I'm trying to replicate that. I'm also a runner so having sidewalks that I can hit out the front door is important.
What about Durham? Is it really as awful as everyone says? I know there's a lot of revitalization going on there. We don't mind living outside of Raleigh but I don't want a crazy commute. It takes me 30 minutes in heavy traffic to go 10 miles now and I hate every moment.

Downtown Durham is not awful. But it doesn't make sense to live there if your work is in Raleigh.
You might like Wake Forest, but I haven't checked rent prices there.
Thanks all. The job probably wouldn't result in a raise so I'm not sure if it's worth it. And I'm really not sure if Raleigh is the place for us. Greenville is a tough act to follow!

I love downtown Durham. There are a lot of really nice areas, it is becoming an "artsy" area, and has the best restaurants in the area IMO. But the commute to downtown Raleigh would be a killer, for me at least.

It's no cheaper than Raleigh and there is less inventory.
