We're going to be replacing our entry door in the very near future. I'd like to hear some recommendations from anyone who has had theirs replaced recently. In particular, we're looking for a good carpenter or handyman to come and measure the door for us and then do installation. We have brick siding, if that makes any difference.

I'd also welcome any brand recommendations. We're leaning toward a mid-range fiberglass door, most likely with a faux wood finish.

I'm not that interested in having Lowes or Home Depot contract out the work, as I understand this tends to be more expensive (middle-man fee) and we won't have any choice in who the big box actually chooses to do the installation. Please correct me if you've found this isn't the case.

"in theory", regardless of your home's exterior finish, the front door opening will be very standard. There will be many posters following me that will encourage you to do it yourself, since you'll be ordering the door & it can be delivered.

If, after reading those suggestions, you decide you still want to pay a professional to help you through the process, just DM me and I'll let you know. It's a job for a qualified handyman that you can trust to do it right the first time, or be happy to return should there be an adjustment needed.

PS - where you live will make a difference, so let us know.

Thanks for the response BoBromhal. I suppose the decision to replace the door myself would be contingent on the labor cost for a handyman.

I live in east Cary. If you know any trustworthy handymen who do good work, send me a PM if you can't list them here.

FWIW, we had Lowe's install our replacement front door several years ago, and I would not hesitate to do it again. It is a fairly cookie-cutter job in modern homes, and I like having a store manager I can collar if I have to go up the chain.
Installation was not that expensive, and they do run a special from time to time.

We had Pella install a patio door, too, maybe 10 years ago. It was OK, too.
