I'm so glad that this thread has been rejuvenated! We are relatively new here and metal detecting is a hobby we have been thinking about starting. Current information about clubs in the Durham/Chapel Hill area and a point in the right direction to learn the rules in Nc would be appreciated.

It's a fun hobby. Lots of Civil War history in this area. Personally, I like looking for old silver coins. One of my oldest silver coins is a 1877 Seated Liberty Half Dollar. Many have found older than that. Silver and gold come out of the ground he same way that they went into it. Maybe a little tarnished but otherwise, no deterioration. I've been doing this off and on since the 70s and I still enjoy it. I suspect you will too.

I think we would like it. Can you recommend a reliable dealer in the Durham/Chapel Hill area to see about purchasing detectors and to get information about the rules governing their use in NC?

Sorry, can't recommend anyone in the area. Kellyco (on the internet) is a reputable dealer. My suggestion is don't get a top of the line detector. It will take you too long to learn how to use it. My detecting partner uses a Garrett ACE 250 detector, in fact he has two of them (redundancy). They sell for around $250. He's been very satisfied with it.

A couple things to try to remember. Get permission before detecting on private property. No detecting in National Parks. If you dig up trash or anything dangerous, remove it and dispose of it properly. Don't just leave it there. Most of all fill your holes back up.

One of the best things you can do, even better than joining a club (in my opinion) is to join/read the many metal detecting forums on the internet. You will learn a lot.

I'm pretty sure my buddy is going to try to sell one of his Ace 250s. He just purchased a Garrett ACE AT Pro. If you're interested I'll let him know. My first detector was a used one. When I found my first Walking Liberty Half Dollar, I was "hooked". Good Luck.

RW,
Is there a particular forum(s) you would recommend for me to check out?...One that might be more "beginner friendly"?

Nice to see a club in the area. I am hoping to move there in the next year.

I am curious what happens at the meetings? I always detect alone and have never attended a detecting meeting before.

rwsnc, love treasurenet. Could read the stories there for hours.

Wish I could tell you what happens at the meetings but unfortunately, I never attended one and decided not to renew my membership this year.

Personally, I don't think it's a good idea to detect alone.

I am the only person I know who enjoys it, and am female too. I have tried taking someone with me and it's too much of a distraction for me and too boring for them to tag along for very long.

Would be nice to meet others at some point.
