The OP's initial post said, "I'm looking at new cities to potentially move to and the Raleigh/triangle area is one I've been looking into."

What's being done at the state level affects the Triangle, even if it's better off than other parts of the state. It would be remiss of the regular posters on here if we did not mention the state of educational affairs in NC to a young graduate wanting to move here to become a teacher.

I could not in good conscience recommend NC to a brand new teacher who has no other ties to the state. Even my staunch Republican teacher friends think the the state's treatment of NC teachers is less than wonderful.

If she has ties to NC then, sure, I think it could work. I am hopeful that the state will turn around and do better by education as a whole. But if she doesn't have ties to NC then I think looking elsewhere to start with makes sense. If things turn around education-wise in NC and she still wants to move here then she can move in a few years.

[quote=lkartje;36697643]As a soon to be college grad from the University of Michigan, I'm looking at new cities to potentially move to and the Raleigh/triangle area is one I've been looking into.

As usual any mention of teaching on this message board brings out tantrums and political ranting....

For the OP.... all I can say is read it all carefully and take it all with a grain of salt. There will be a need for good elementary teachers in the Triangle for years to come. It will all depend on if/how you want to make it work out for your situation.

And beware if coming here from UM.... there are LOTS of Buckeye fans in the Triangle you will likely be outnumbered!
