It's not, the list is in descending order from the best average score through to the worst.

NC fails should be the title. Only two counties (Wake and Watauga) out of 100 satisfied the College Board's benchmark:

"The benchmark – a score of 1550, which is associated with a 65 percent chance of having a B- average GPA or higher during the first year of college – is also associated with a higher likelihood of enrolling at a four-year college and graduating from college within four years, the College Board said."

Maybe someone can count the individual schools, however Chapel Hill/Carrboro schools combined placed #1 with a score of 1766, which was only exceeded by NC School of Science and Math - 1995, and Raleigh Charter High - 1858.

As a note, MA which has the same population as NC had 115 out of 343 high schools that met the benchmark.

Not suggesting your comment isn't valid, but you're comparing counties in NC to individuals schools in MA. A better data point would be how many high schools in NC met the benchmark.

You'd also have to control for participation rates to have a good comparison.

It's totally not surprising at all that the rest of NC's counties didn't meet the College Board's benchmark, but you're not comparing the same thing. You're comparing an average of all high schools in each county to individual high schools in a state.

Thanks so much for doing this Michgc. It's great to see it all together. I believe this is the correct color code.

Green = Chapel Hill Carrboro City Schools
Purple = Charter Schools
Blue = Wake Co Public Schools
Orange = Orange Co Public Schools
Pink = Johnston Co Public Schools
Red = Chatham Co Public Schools
Brown = Durham Public Schools

Just wait 'til the ACT scores come out and make us look terrible since all students have to take it.

Thanks. I probably should have put that key in there.

Is there anything surprising on this list? Like last year, what surprised me the most was Johnston County. I often hear from people who live there that their schools are "excellent." But if this list is somewhat representative of the percentage of students planning to attend college, Johnston seems to fare poorly. The school in that district that performed the best is a non-traditional school that is 5-years and is run in conjunction with a community college. Their second best school is also non-traditional, application school and also gives college credit, but fewer than half of their students took the SATs. In fact, Johnston County is the only county in the area where fewer than half of their students overall took the SATs. And for those who did, their scores are pretty low, overall. Chatham County performed similarly overall (although with a greater percentage participating), but I don't often hear their schools being touted as great like I do with Johnston.

If I did my sorting correctly, it appears that 79 out of 506 schools in NC (15.6%) met that benchmark (average score of 1550 or higher).
