So our move from NJ to Cary, NC is just around the corner since we just accepted an offer on our NJ house after it being on the market for 5 days. My head is spinning on how fast everything is moving and now worried about finding a home since there is virtually no inventory for Davis/Green Hope Elementary School areas that meets our needs. Company is giving us corporate housing and I guess we can just do month to month until a perhouse comes up to market. My concern is if I end up renting in the Cornerstone Apts which is assigned for Davis, if I end up buying a house that is assigned in Green Hope, will the school system allow me to switch schools since it's a county system? I just don't understand how that would work. And of course our agent can't comment on this topic and I've contacted the Wake County Schools and they just say they can't give me an answer until I'm under contract with an address. Has anyone gone through this and can offer any advice?

I'm not sure what you mean by "switch schools" - if you move from one attendance zone to another, yes they will let you switch (since neither of those schools are capped - if they were that would be a different story).

If you are asking - if you start in Davis Drive, can you stay there after you move out of the attendance zone, the answer is usually yes if you provide your own transportation. But they may leave it up to the building principal since DDE is over capacity (though not capped) and they can use one less body there.

yes they'll let you switch as long as the school you want to switch to isn't capped, and neither are, so you're fine.

Sounds like WCSS which we loathe! Ask your company to write you a lease on the property that they are putting you up in and take that to Wake County.

Hope this helps!

your agent can certainly comment, they choose not to.

If you move to a different base (again) during the year, then you can transfer to that school, as long as it's not capped in the grade in question.

now, I'd say two things, just because I feel compelled to:

*you can find plenty of other very good elementary schools not named "Davis Drive" or "Green Hope".
* if you move your kids once during the school year, I'd think it would be best for them NOT to move them again within the school year.

Thanks for the feedback. I really do appreciate it. We are settled on DE and GHE due to the 2 subdivisions we would like to move into. We spent a lot of time over the summer learning and touring each subdivision in Cary, Apex and Morrisville. And we fell in love with and felt at home in Preston Village and Wellsley. I know there are a lot more choices but we had very specific wants in the style of house and location to certain things.

And switching schools from NJ to NC is enough change during a school year. I wouldn''t change again until the end of the school year.

Thanks!
