Okay, I was sober, and quite in control of my faculties.
About 10:15 last night, I was out on my balcony just enjoying the mild temps and checking out the sky. Mars had just descended below the tree line a while before. I live a few miles from RDU. Approaching from my left and at a perfect angle to view, came 2 aircraft, one tailing the other. The second plane looked and sounded like a military jet, and displayed flashing lights. The ambient light made it appear to be dark in color. The plane it was following appeared several shades lighter and there were no lights flashing on the plane. It was totally dark. If you were observing this like I was, you would agree that there was the appearance of only one engine sound, that of the second jet.
Are they landing some kind of military aircraft at RDU? It just struck me as a kind of secretive approach.
Air National Guard and Army National Guard aviation units both operate out of RDU. Aside from that, you also have the Seymour-Johnson AFB near Goldsboro, Army and Air Force aviation out of Ft. Bragg (which commonly flies over the Triangle), and Marine Corps aviation both out New River in Jacksonville and Cherry Point out of Havelock... all of them frequently fly over the Triangle... used to be pretty common to see CH47 Chinooks (spent my fair share of time riding in them, and those will all be Army or Army National Guard), H53 series helicopters (HH53, CH53, MH53, etc., operated by the Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps), and the V22 Ospreys (exclusive to the Marine Corps) quite often.
Saw three of them flying in formation one afternoon last week.
I saw the exact same thing in southwest Apex. They were heading north/northeast. I tend to see a lot of military aircraft flying around here. I believe I'm seeing a lot of the training flights from Ft. Bragg, even though Bragg is 50-60 miles away.
60 miles is nothing for aircraft, not to mention that it's 60 road miles, its only about 40 miles as the crow flies, not to mention the other installations I mentioned (Seymour Johnson AFB, Pope AFB, Cherry Point MCAS, New River MCAS), not to mention National Guard activity out of RDU. You can narrow down where it came from by what it is... most jet aircraft which aren't the F/A18 Hornet are going to be Air Force, the V22 Osprey is exclusively used by the Marine Corps, the CH47 Chinook is exclusive to the Army, the CH53 is used by everyone but the Army and Coast Guard, etc. C130s could be either Air Force or Marine Corps.
Being that it was Yesterday around 7:30 and they were heading NNE, do you think it could have been some response to the rocket launch/explosion from yesterday?
In general, I see military craft all the time too, for reasons already mentioned, but I wonder if there was a specific response due to the launch issues?

No the OP wrote that it was the evening before he posted at around 10:15 PM, so it had nothing to do with the rocket from Wallop's Island.
