Hi,
We are contemplating a move from Boca Raton to somewhere around Raleigh - probably Cary, Morrisville, Apex. (We would be working in RTP.)
Has anyone made a similar move recently? How does the cost of living compare? We've used online salary calculators, but have used them in the past and found them to be off.
We've already considered how having a state income tax will impact us. Can you truly rent a good 3 bedroom/2 bath home in those areas for ~$1200 a month? Can you buy the same for $200 - $225k? (That isn't in the flight path.) We've looked on realty websites, but those don't always tell the complete story.
How about energy, water, etc? Car insurance?
Thanks in advance!

We moved from Broward County to Raleigh 7 years ago, huge culture shock, among other factors non related to the area, but please check it out as long as you can, not just a couple of weeks, we are hoping our home sells ASAP so we can return to the warmth of Florida, though not the Ft Lauderdale area....We thought the hurricanes were bad in So Fl. here the weather radio goes off way to frequently for tornado watch' s and warnings, high winds, etc! That's just one of my beefs, another was totaling my truck 2 years ago on ice, want me to go on, better not, I get bashed a lot on here when I voice my opinion ! Don't get me wrong it's a beautiful state, just not for everyone, and depends on what you are use to, and what you are looking for, if you want a laid back place, this may be for you ! I am NYC born & raised and lived in South Fl for 30 years, so.......best of luck !!!

I thought you lived in Willow Spring? That's a completely different experience than Raleigh or even immediate suburbs.

I'd never bash you for that.

This area has its bad points too and taxes are relatively high.

Note to people who are moving from South Florida, you might not want to move to the Wake/Johnston County line like the disgruntled poster above. I'm not saying that it's a bad place but it's pretty exurban in comparison to most places in MiamiDade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties. If you coming from the South Florida area, consider the more rural areas of the Triangle to be like the farming communities of extreme South MiamiDade and plan accordingly.

I moved from Coral Springs to the equivalent of Parkland, so no complaints here!

//www.city-data.com/forum/ralei...des-photo.html will likely answer a lot of your questions.

You can buy 3 bedroom homes in your price range but it will likely be one that needs updating.

Renting will probably be a bit more unless you get a great deal.

Would recommend you book a stay at a B&B in the area with chatty innkeepers.

Good luck.
