I'm a New Yorker -- well, I live in WESTERN NEW YORK (contrary to popular belief there is more to the state than New York City, which I love dearly and have family living in), but North Carolina Summers are HOT and HUMID, and I CANNOT WAIT to get down there in 2015 from this frigid tundra and enjoy them. :-)
Here in Buffalo I only used the A/C about 4 times this past Summer, which, to me, is not Summer at all. :-)
I'm not sure I used my A/C here that much. I don't even have it in the car. If you like being refrigerated you just want a place up North that isn't so snowy.
I would be happy to move somewhere hotter and muggier than the Triangle.
I might point out that the sunshine isn't better here than in WNY either. Lots of cloudy days here.

This matches what I've experienced. I lived in Northern NY for 10 years (Potsdam, Canton) and central NY for 3 (Rochester).
Even on days when there was sunshine up there it was mostly grey. We'll get our grey days here but it may be for a week or so at at time. Not from Oct to March.
We moved to Chapel Hill from Minnesota where it also gets humid and muggy during the summer. We only arrived in September, so we haven't experienced a summer here yet. But I am looking forward to it. Heat is what I like. Snow, cold and 70 is not warm enough
