I noticed that my kids' school (in Garner) has lightning rods on the top of one of the chimneys. Is that common? I haven't noticed any on houses around here, but at the same time, a lot of these newer subdivisions would be prime targets for lightning strikes, I'd think (i.e. no tall trees in the vicinity).

No. You sure they were lightning rods? I'm not aware of any schools in Wake County with chimneys, let alone lightning rods.

Most of the older schools had boilers that required chimneys. Lighting rods were once quite popular here. I can remember when it was common for lightning rod salesmen to be knocking on the door.

I work for the school system and have been to just about every single school and I can't think of one that has a chimney. Not saying one doesn't exists, I just can't think of one...

Broughton... The chimney hosts a pre-migratory roost for chimney swifts each year...thousands of them. I'm sure there are others. I'll look around for more.

A quick Google image search of Garner schools suggests that North Garner Middle School has one.

That's what oak and pine trees around one's house are for. Having had two of them struck by lightning, I know that they do a good job. Makes a mess when the sap boils from inside and the tree trunk explodes, though.
