for what it's worth, I know you put a lot of time, effort and thought into your choice and I do think you made the right decision for where you are in life right now. Once you move, it would be great if you have the time, to post on the Austin thread and let us fellow Californians know how you are adjusting. A lot of times once people move, we never hear any follow up on how things are going and, from a personal standpoint, I'm wrestling myself between NC and TX (but I'm in the retirement stage of life)!

And I've had that experience multiple times there. Its just a fun place to be.

You know, that was such a smart thing to do - stay downtown and check it out like that. I think a lot of people might think a downtown is always hopping but it's not necessarily the case, as you saw. Good luck in Austin! Seems great there.

Will do! It won't be for a while, but I'll definitely follow up.

Californian12345, can I please ask you for an update. It looks like you moved two years ago. I am from Italy, but lived many years in the Bay Area and loved it. I really miss CA but left because we could not afford it. We moved to North Houston for work in 2014 and hate it here... even after 4 years we do not feel at home at all. We are debating between Austin and Raleigh. Our kids are 2 and 8. My husband is in IT and I own a photography studio which I will have to rebuild after the move. Please share some feedback! Thank you.

Californian12345 apparently has moved to Austin but hasn't posted here since April of 2016.

I know it's 3 years old but this thread was so very helpful! Thanks for all who shared their thoughts. I am going to post a new thread asking about career opportunities in Raleigh.

Raleigh feels like a small town compared to San Francisco. Fewer things to do, and they are farther away... beaches 2 1/2 hours, mountains maybe 3 hours. My partner and I will probably stay here another 5 years then move back to Mountain View to retire. We're doing the opposite of what everyone says you should do but we like California and have friends there.

I don't know if I can be of any assistance, but I lived my entire life in San Jose Ca (50+ yrs). It's got so bad in so many different ways, we finally moved to Cary in July this year (2017). It's only been 3 months but loving it. But being one of the few remaining sane people from Cailifornia I can only speak for my own results.

So, what makes you more sane than other people in California?
