Ah, Poggly, the way Joe said it was:

And that's just confusing since Tennessee is due west of North Carolina.

The Blue Ridge Parkway is located only in NC and VA. If you travel farther north on the parkway you will get to Virginia. It doesn't go in TN at all. The northernmost section of the parkway in NC is just southwest of Mt Airy at Cumberland Knob, NC. From there it crosses the VA line right near Galax and the Blue Ridge Music Center. The National Park Service has a pretty decent map and lots of info: http://www.nps.gov/blri/planyourvisi...BLRImap1-1.pdf and http://www.nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/ .

You can get to TN by going north from southwestern NC, but if that's what was meant it was a little bit muddled since Joe was talking about "anywhere on the Blue Ridge Parkway" and traveling a "little further north". Further north on the parkway just takes you to NW NC and SW VA.

My folks are from the mountains in SW VA, East Tennessee, and Western NC, and I've been traipsing around those parts all my life.

At any rate, the mountains are a good bet that time of year whichever direction you choose. But the beach is nice, too. I like the suggestion of DC, too.

Thanks everyone. The kids are currently, 5, 8, 10, and almost 12. They are all pretty decent bike riders..Hubby and I? Not so much lol.
We have a trip planned for Nashville for this Spring. I like the idea of a trip to DC, Philly, NYC if the hubby will go for it. He does NOT like big cities, but I would love it.

Another vote for Washington. Stay in Old Town Alexandria, VA and take the metro around.

For a long weekend trip, I would put Richmond, Williamsburg, Asheville, and Charleston on the list.

I second DC.

Our kids loved it. International Spy Museum, Smithsonian museums, the monuments and memorials on the mall, National Zoo, the Capitol building, the White House, the Supreme Court, Meridian Hill Park, Williamsburg, Bush Gardens, Six Flags...

Hotel Helix is a fun place to stay. Affordable too.
