Those of you who've lived here less than 30 years (most of you, I suspect) may not have ever known that there is a vast area underneath Cameron Village that used to be the hottest place in town, with shops, a popular arcade, but most of all known for its nightclub scene that was legendary for showcasing local bands (and many other well-known people before they were famous, such as Bette Midler).
A Facebook group devoted to Raleigh's history recently linked to this blog about the Village Subway (I hope that's not considered a "competing site", RedZin) and while a search will pull up lots on the Village Subway (aka "The Underground at Cameron Village"), this is the coolest I've seen as far as actual old photos of then (and the dilapidated way it looks now). I personally was mostly too young to go to its clubs in its heyday--the 1970s--but I do remember the separate entrance in the parking lot that led down to it. For a long time as a kid, I actually though we had a subway in Raleigh
Oldtimers, reminisce; new-timers, you might find it interesting.
Here's the post.
Edit: I just noticed that it's from 2013, but I had never seen it before, and I don't recall discussion here about the Village Subway.
