To get it built faster, they say if they didn't toll it, it would have taken another 20 years to get that section they just opened funded and completed. They want to toll I-95 as well.
So not only did Western Wake residents get burned for having to pay toll using 540 as opposed to those living in North/Eastern Wake, now they get burned again for raising rates?
I thought they promised once 540 costs were paid off via toll fees, they would remove toll fees NOT raise them!
Ummm.... to build roads, just not that many in the Triangle. Over the last 10 to 15 years, the state has been building new roads and rebuilding old ones like gangbusters.
You have:
Charlotte Beltway (I-485) over 60 miles
Greensboro Beltway, which includes new parts of I-73 and I-85 and I-840
Winsten-Salem Northern Beltway is finally getting started
Fayetteville Beltway (I-295)
Clayton Bypass
Goldsboro Bypass will be done in a few years
Kinston Bypass is coming soon with the continue upgrading of US70 to interstate standards from Clayton to Beaufort
The new I-795 from Wilson to Goldsboro
The upgrading of US64 from east of Plymouth to Columbia
All the new sections of I-74 near High Point, and around Rockingham and eventually heading to the coast
Knightdale Bypass
Wilmington Bypass (I-140) soon to be completed
The rebuild of I-40 in Raleigh
They just finished widening I-85 over the Yadkin River and will begin widening I-85 around Kannapolis.
The list goes on and on, it's pretty amazing to think about all of the new freeways and expanded freeways that the state has built, is building or will build from 2000 onward, you're talking hundreds of miles and billions and billions of dollars.
Excuse me, but what business do you have bringing actual facts into this discussion?
I very rarely have to drive on 540 so I don't mind paying the what? $1 toll whenever I do have to drive on it. 147 is a toll road too, right? i'm not sure. I only ever use 147 for 2-3 exits in RTP and if I need to go to DT Durham. I know it isn't tolled there.
Yes every state wants to toll that road. I think it's like 20 bux to get through delaware on that road. Can you imagine the income? Now with the plate tolling systems run buy these companies they can stealthly charge whatever, you get a bill in the mail and you have no choice. It's the perfect gotcha, don't pay well next year you can't register your car. The infrastructure and slowing being developed and tested to put cameras all over and start tolling every road and the investment is next to nothing. Not booths, state employees, just 3rd world people getting paid pennies. It's perfect.
I flew to Denver and drove downtown, I acrued a toll for like 12 bux and I had NO IDEA until I got a 45 dollar charge from the rental company. I am looking at the GPS, paying attention to the road and an information sigh (one you don't pay attention to if you are worried about other stuff) lets you know it's 12 bux to keep driving on this road. Ooops you missed it oh well, 12 bux.

The funny thing is .. the Delaware toll on I-95 is one of the easiest $5 to avoid. It's a 5 min detour to get around it, and there's a Wawa off the exit too. How could you go wrong?
Also time saved can be relative. It's a lot more than 2 minutes saved for me by taking the toll road. I really value my time and it's somewhere that I don't mind sinking money.
I do agree though that off-peak tolling would make more sense. There's definitely quite a bit of volume during rush hour on the toll roads now. It's built up a bit over the past year. However it would be nice for some disparity, payment wise, between say 5:30P on Tuesday and 1:00P on a Saturday. I'd settle for even weekday vs weekend rates.
I live in Apex about 1 mi from the US 64 ramps to NC 540.
Definitely >2 minutes savings, to anywhere, PEAK. But, costs me about $0.86 (or something like that) to go a single exit from US 64 to Salem St. That is 2 mins off peak -- not at all worth it.
Another example is the $0.40 (or whatever it is) to go from US 64 to Green Level Church Rd. Peak, definitely worth it. Off peak, complete waste.
To the airport .. again, peak, huge time saver. Off peak, it prob adds 10 mins driving locally. For about $1.60'ish, when you're picking up people (sometimes people who you don't want to pick up) - I'd avoid the toll (half kidding)
Net: they should adjust the rates off peak, I for one would use it more often.
