Indeed it definitely made me chuckle.

Raleigh and Chapel Hill traditionally have been the most bureaucratic red-tape and NIMBY-apologist of municipalities in the Triangle. Durham and Cary probably the most pro-development in mindset. Raleigh seems to be turning a corner.

Chapel Hill, while still probably my favorite town in the area and will always hold a special place in my heart, is undoubtedly the NIMBY poster-child. Can't win with the most vocal of residents there (emphasis on the most vocal; not necessarily the majority of the people who live there). They say in one breath that more affordable housing should be top priority; and in the next scream at the top of their lungs any time any project that might cause one tree to be taken down or one more vehicle on the road around said project.

"Everyone should be able to afford a $750k+ colonial or mid-century modern home on a half acre+ wooded lot and walk to Franklin Street!"

You were writing about Chapel Hill. What about Cary? Does Cary support a lot of high density projects that make housing affordable? I remember looking at Durham and Chapel Hill (and Raleigh) real estate 10 years ago. Even back then you got poor quality real estate for inflated prices. This was *after* the 2008 real estate correction. I remember one Chapel Hill property with a cracked foundation that was being sold as-is.

I feel bad for the locals because every time us transplants come here and pay inflated prices for real estate, it makes it worse for everyone else.

I've seen several people on this forum lately mentioning how NIMBY and anti-development Raleigh is, but given the pace and type of development in the city over the years, I don't get it. It seems like the powers that be are pretty keen on growth and creating a more urban big city image and aren't getting in the way of much development, but I definitely may have missed something. Whatever the case though, I don't think it's fair to lump Raleigh in with Chapel Hill. They aren't even in the same league.

The real estate development industry owns the mayor and most of the city council of Raleigh. In exchange for campaign donations, the administration ignores the very real concerns -- and quality of life issues -- of Raleigh residents and approves whatever the real estate developers want.

If no one realizes that, they haven't been paying attention.

I've watched/attended every city council meeting since February 4, 2020. I wish more people would pay closer attention.

The local paper does not have the resources to cover the intricacies of their bad decisions, and for some reason (continued employment?) long-time newspaper reporters refuse to do stories that may ruffle feathers.

Local TV news wants to keep on the good side of the mayor, and TV news stories are generally short in order to fit into their time restraints. Stories of the mayor and city council would need to be longer to explain the issues and the consequences of their bad decisions. So -- it's not going to happen.

While I am usually inclined to believe the worst of the world and corruption, you will have to provide more specific examples as to why this is the case. What evidence do you have that the mayor is owned by the developers? I can speak for Johnston county on the other hand, lots of folks who work closely on developments out there tell me about that corruption.

lovebrentwood has long had a chip on their shoulder for the current council and mayor. It's a theme in a lot of their posts. So I wouldn't take them overly serious at this point as it's a broken record.

Johnston County is one of the most corrupt and backwards counties in the state. I grew up there and can attest.

Um, no. I actually try not to talk politics here. I have a City of Raleigh Politics FB group. I talk politics there.

I've been angry at the mayor since February 2020. I have rarely posted here in that time. But thanks for playing.
