Hi....We are considering a move to Chapel Hill and would like to here from some of you who have first hand experience with the Chapel Hill school system....I know it is considered to be the best in the state, but it would be great to hear from some of you who actually have children in the system.

Specifically I would like to know if there is a sense of community among the kids and/or parents, how you feel the quality of education really is, how satisfied you have been with the overall experience.

Our children are elementary age and we have been looking at Glenwood Elementary, so if anyone has kids there it would be great to hear from you!

Thanks so much for your help....There's only so much info you can get from "Great Schools" so I thought hearing it from the horses mouth, so to speak would help....

I have the very same questions you do. Our boys will be in 1st and 2nd grade, and we're moving into the Glenwood district. The school is very highly rated, but we visited yesterday and saw that the classrooms are very crowded with stuff (no children, as it was after school hours). This is a result of it being the oldest school in the district, we were told.

We met a 2nd grade teacher and talked with her a while. She seemed disgruntled and vented her displeasure to us (including our sons), at being overworked, the parents making her life miserable, etc. - all quite inappropriate to share with prospective parents (and students!), we felt.

She told us the principal is moving to a new school and taking some teachers with him/her - the asst. principal will be promoted to fill the spot.

We were looking forward to our boys attending this great school, but now we're very concerned about the overcrowding and quality of teachers [the one we spoke with is one of three for second grade - chances are pretty high one of our sons would have her :-( ]

Have you found any additional information? We're very nervous now, and considering private school based on our experience yesterday. Thanks for your help!

Our second grader is finishing the year at Estes Hill Elementary. We have been very pleased with her teacher, the school, the children, and the parent community. The PTA and parents are incredibly supportive of the school and the school tries very hard to do the right thing for all the children. We have been impressed.

I would recommend talking to some more parents in the area. One teacher's response may not be indicative.

I have heard great things about Glenwood from parents there. It's got a great reputation--not sure about that specific teacher (!) but a bad egg could be anywhere...

Estes Hills also has many satisfied parents!

Estes Hills is #1 on our pick of elementary schools. But right now, we're focusing on the high school. First choice is to land within the ECHHS zone and hopefully that will put us close to Estes Hills, too.

I think most of Estes Hills goes to ECHHS. Raleigh North Carolina Real Estate Listings - Home Search (broken link) allows you to search for house by school district.

Thanks for that link. It's looking more and more like we're going to be doing the split family thing for a few months in late 2008/early 2009 and we've decided it's best to stay with the bigger place here in MA and look for a townhouse in CH (but zoned to the same schools where we'd eventually buy a house).

Homesomeday, you should check into Coventry (street address is Essex Dr), as they are townhomes near ECHS (knowing that's where you want to be districted). I believe they have some for rent and it's actually difficult to find good rentals in that area. The other option is Weatherstone, but I think more students live there. Both are along Weaver Dairy Rd, and Coventry is actually within walking distance of ECHS.
