Well for meals I might be able to qualify for ebt until I get some money saved up. I have like $600 to my name right now so yea. I can be pretty good with utilities. Use natural light and sweaters etc. I don't really prefer the roommate option but I guess I realize now it's the most realistic option. If I find the right place I wouldn't even mind rooming for 6 months to 1 year. This roommate thing might actually work really really well.
EBT is not easy to get here. NC has very few benefits for needy persons and affordable housing is not readily available.
This is not the utopia promised in the media. Wait until you have a better job.
You are lucky that there are three big colleges nearby. Find one or two roomates who are at least in their 3rd year to share with. Once you have a good base, later you can look for other options that appeal to you, plus you might get a raise and later be able to afford better. The advantage of having roommates, if they are decent, is that you will meet more people than if you were here on your own. Good luck and remember to treat your roommates respectfully.
If you are wondering why I said 3rd year, it is because these folks are likely to be more serious, not just it college to goof off.
Thats why there is such a fight to raise minimum wage. My daughter and her boyfriend live in an apartment for $450/month but its not in a desirable part of town.
Agreed with the positive posts. It can be done as you can see because some are already doing it. You aren't going to start out getting your own place or anything and you said you are fine with sharing expenses so it seems like things will work out. You have a job. That's the important factor!
You sound driven. That's really the key to making things happen in life. Good luck to you!
Also would suggest trying to get overtime, or even a 10-15 extra hours of part-time work elsewhere. Waiting tables isn't glamorous, but you can make some decent extra money and definitely good way to meet new people.
Congrats on the new job stackgravity, that's awesome! I think TarHeelNick is is right about finding a room to rent for around $450 per month. That should easily be doable. I love the the downtown area of Durham, and Richmond reminds me of it quite a bit. Take a look at craigslist, most of these don't look to be scams or anything, and some include all utils. Good Luck!
You need another part-time job, then you can do it. Our son was able to do it AND then was able to buy a house on $14.00/hr there. Of course he was not a partier, so he did not have those expenses.
Can you do it? Of course. It has been done many, many times, myself included! Is it easy---absolutely not but it will be a good learning experience. In my case I worked multiple jobs and went to school for electrical engineering. Obtaining a skill set thats allows you to earn substantially more money will be the key to improving your standard of living.
