Hi. I'm interested in a career in mortgage loan processing. I see job postings for these types of jobs all the time. Everyone wants experience in the field but I'm not sure where to get such training? Any suggestions or does anyone do this type of work in NC that can offer guidance to a newbie? I know some of the local Real Estate offices offer real estate training but cant find anything local for mortgage processing training.

Thanks so much

My wife starteed as a processor. She enjoyed the work but she learned on the job. As far as I know there really isnt any training out there.

If you are very organized its a good job for you!

Leah,

What work or educational background do you have that gives you a leg up on a processing job?
Processing requires a real mix of attention to detail and interface with stressed out buyers.
Part clerical, part hand-holding when done right.

Thanks for replying. I'm very organized individual and have many years of clerical and customer service experience. While I do not have mortgage experience per say, I do have quite a bit of banking experience. I'm in a job now that doesn't provide opportunities for growth and I'm mainly looking for a career where I can learn and grow while helping others

You should look into being an assistant for a good loan originator. You will get good training that way without being thrown into it.

You are right, processors are always in demand! Good Processors are hard to find. I would suggest you start by working with a mortgage loan officer and be an assistant.

There are processing boot camps and classes, which wouldn't be a bad start. However, a processor who's been to training only and a Mortgage Loan officer assistant apply for the same job, the assistant would be more likely to be hired as they've already been in the field.

If you can find a good LO to be an assistant and you take some processing classes you'd be hired up quickly!

There is demand for processors, but, having one in my circle, I can tell you that it is also a job that is heavily dependent on the economy and interest rate fluctuations. When things are good, its a great job, but two bancks merge, interest rates go up or home sales drop, and suddenly you are scrambling to find something and competing with lots of other people. Make sure you keep your network up to date so it is easier to find that next job and keep more than usual in savings when you are getting OT when things are booming.

This is great advice. I've watched my sister deal with these exact situations in the mortgage business. She started as a processor, became a loan officer and then moved on to being an underwriter. She loves her job and loves the flexibility of being able to work from home and make her own schedule. But there is definitely a huge amount of variation in pay based on the market.
