Or they may know that someone is there, but the confusion of not knowing who it is can cause them to become very agitated. It can be quite the opposite of comforting.

My father is currently showing signs of early dementia. Knowing what he saw his father go through, he has already told his children that as long as his needs are attended to (he will be in skilled nursing, so he will be cared for) he doesn't want us to see him in the end stages.

It's a very personal decision, and gut wrenching. It's terrible to pass judgement on someone for something so intensely personal.
Woody Durham was not talking about the late stages that you are talking about..
He was talking about a stage where Dean Smith knew he had a vistor, enjoyed vistors
but wasn't able to figure out who he was..

Was there more than what you quoted? Because there wasn't enough there to assume that he enjoyed visitors at that point.

Anyway, be as "ticked off" as you want. Not your friend, not your family, not your decision to make.

...not to mention the OP was not a first-person observer of the situation. It doesn't get much more self-righteous than that.

I realize that a lot of people worship the ground that Woody Durham walks on...

Heck, he may be on the forum himself..

To be honest, I don't even know who the heck Woody Durham is. So there goes that theory ...

I don't care who said it. My view doesn't have anything to do with it being Woody Durham or Joe Schmoe. I am basing my opinion on my personal experience with elderly relatives who suffered with dementia.
