In home care wouldn't work for me - my dog would have to be crated when they're not there, or she'd basically destroy everything, and she'd be really lonely. She's very much an extrovert and loves to be boarded (I am thankful for this - she also loves the vet). My dog likes her crate but she's never in it for very long.
OP I've been boarding my dog at Pet Wagon in Durham because they also have a great daycare - they do home visits but it's still kinda far for you (I don't know if they go that far for home visits). It's within your hour limit though.
You aren't being mean but you are falling into the messageboard trap of being contradictory, honestly. Of course there are reputable, honest, ethical, safe, and caring options to board your dog...come on.
We have had great experiences with camp bow wow. They have cameras, and my dog is happy when she's there, frolicking w other dogs for most of her day every day. I would rather have her socializing with other dogs and running around playing inside and outside than just get walks. Some locations do have private suites you can upgrade to.
I asked for advice since I've never boarded a dog in this area....thanks. I've seen some very nasty places and would like to avoid that.
I'm NOT intending to be mean, but a "good boarding kennel" for a dog or cat is almost anitethical. At almost any price.
I always hire techs from my vet's office to stay in my home with them. They know how to spot problems, love my pets, and are worth the money. I have never put my family members in a kennel.
Sheesh why such irrational judgement? I'm actually not heartless for boarding my dog - she's got quite a good life. Yep, I consider her my family member as well.
Even if I wanted to pay a vet tech to live in my house while I was away, my dog still wouldn't have as much fun as she does being boarded and playing with the other dogs in daycare.
There are bad kennels out there, and there's one I'd never return to but others seem to like - that doesn't mean all are bad.
What is going on here this week with people thinking their opinions are the only correct ones? Seems to be a theme on the forum right now.
Geez folks, different strokes for different folks. What works for one, may not work for another, or visa-versa.
If you want to harp on something, harp on putting "family members" in a Kennel. (Sure, I've thought about putting my ex-wife in one a few times, but never actually did it...)
Keep it light peeps. If someone else's ideas don't work for you, feel free to ignore them.
My dog actually likes going to the kennel. He starts getting excited if we're just driving in the general area of the kennel. It's actually more like a country club for dogs. He's very sociable with people and other dogs so I know he's not going to get lonely while he's there. I much prefer this route than having someone I don't know well staying in my home.

I have done this as well, except our dog stayed at their house (as was the preference of the vet tech as they had pets to take care of as well).
