Because my company is closed on Monday in observance of President's Day, I've been operating under the assumption that schools will be closed too, as they have always been in our eight years living in Wake County. I was just stunned to learn that my son has school on Monday.

Did I miss something?

I am with you, if you had not posted this, I might not have sent my kids in on Monday! I really thought I saw that it was closed but I just re-checked. Truthfully, with all the other days/time off for holidays. early release, teacher workday and weather delays, I don't mind skipping one holiday!

It's not so much about skipping a holiday as it is about skipping a Federal holiday.

There is no Federal holiday of "President's Day." That's a term drummed up by retailers. The Federal holiday is Washington's Birthday.

When I lived in the northeast it seemed most places observed it. Less so in the South, it seems.

Does your son go to Traditional? In recent years the year round students had to go on President's Day but Traditional kids had off (I believe).

Wake County had school last President's Day as well. I know because hubby and I had the day to ourselves which doesn't happen very often .

**edit** Actually, I just looked back at my calendar and noticed that last President's Day was a "snow make-up day" so perhaps this year WCPSS was trying to be proactive in the event we had another crazy winter.

We used to have President's Day off when I was in school here in Wake. I think they swapped that day off with MLK day.

My kids have school (Orange County - year round school) on Presidents Day. They did last year too. They also have school on Columbus Day - another federal holiday. I don't think that the holiday being "federal" has much to do with it.
