Please read this thread first. It answers many of the frequently-asked questions this forum gets almost daily.

Your question is way too vague. For one thing, there are plenty of places to move to other than Raleigh if all you want to do is "get away from NY"; don't go by just what someone says is the "best place". What's best for them might not be best for YOU. And definitely get at least one jkob before moving; lots of folks have flocked down from NY just like you, expecting to find jobs right away, and ended up having to move back because they couldn't. It's not Utopia--the more specific you can be with your questions and reasons for moving (not just "we heard it was the best place", but what specifics about Raleigh appeal to you), the better people can help you.

As far as "School districts", NC school districts are county-wide, so everywhere in Wake county is one district, with over 150,000 students. Not like NY where every little village has its own.

Remember, many jobs pay far less here and there is very limited public transit.

It's not that cheap to live here any more so be sure to check salaries and rents.

@ Francois
reason for moving to NC from NY, we are tired of the life of NY, we are looking for somewhere that is less stressful than NYC and we wan to raise our kids away from the city. we think that Raleigh might offer us what we are looking for. I checked both the salary and rent. And I know we will survive in NC salary. we will definitely get a job before we move. we just want to know about the area.

We just moved here to Raleigh a year ago from Pittsburgh. Despite the folks on this board who believe they should shut the gates on Raleigh and not let anyone else in, it's a great place to raise a family. As noted from a prior reply, schools are a county-wide system. It's quite different than what most from the north are used to. The areas that will have the most community-based feel to its schools (where kids aren't bused 10-15 miles for the sake of integration) are mostly in the southern (Clayton, Garner) and western (Cary, Apex, Holly Springs) parts of the county. Cary, Apex and Holly Springs also have the biggest influx of northerners - so there's a lot of openness to newer transplants.

Great place to raise a family and growing very rapidly. My only complaint is that I wish they would leave more of the natural beauty but I can not fault anyone for wanting a better place for their kids! Just get ready to pay the price to live here as demand for housing is high pushing up prices for rents and purchases.

you're still way too vague.

your age 2 and age 4 kids - they're not in school yet. If you'd like to know the 3 best high schools in the Triangle, regardless of budget, we can tell you that.

It's just that in 99% of the cases, budget matters.

When folks tell you that school districts are county-wide, that means they are large, and diverse - both racial population and cost to live (attend) particular schools.

As many times as this exact question gets asked, I can only assume that there are small towns in the NE where one can be low-moderate income and somehow easily still find housing in the A+ schools you want.

While there are many small school districts in the State of New York, the OP mentioned that she's from NYC, so I'm sure she's used to being in a large, diverse school district.

Lots of different areas. Hard to say which one will be the best fit for your family.

Chapel Hill has terrific schools. Housing and property taxes are higher than in other areas. Some love Durham (terrific eateries). Others find Cary is their cup of tea. Garner is great.
