I'm moving to Raleigh from out of state and have determined that the basic sales tax is 6.75%.
Are there items that are tax-exempt? Are there items that cost more than the basic tax?
Thanks in advance for helping me get an idea of the overall taxes to expect.

Food at the grocery store is taxed at 2%. I think prescription drugs are exempt. Most services aren't subject to sales tax, although there is frequent discussion about changing that.

"Are there items that cost more than the basic tax?" I'm not sure what you mean by that.

Don't forget the county rate on top of the state rate.

6.75% includes the Wake County portion of the sales tax.

Ah - I'm so used to the higher rates in Orange and Durham.

there's a variety of taxes. As I said just yesterday, if you assume 7%, that's a reasonably conservative number.

Prepared foods (grocery store or restaurant) are extra, for example

Thank Heaven your towns have the brains to build rail. Wake has no such wisdom.

Eh, the old Wake Plan was like the most lazy light rail plan ever. Like 90% of it was on existing ROW, and it didn't even go to North Hills, which is probably the third biggest island of density in the city after Downtown and Hillsborough Street.
