I grew up walking to school and would like my kids to be able to do the same. If any one can give me some advice that would be great! Also I noticed Angier only has 1 elementary school, will this change with all the new housing?

You can find out a lot of information by using the search link on this forum, and the advanced search will help you narrow it down to just the raleigh/durham/chapel hill/cary forum. Anyhow, that being said, there are many changes going on with the wake county schools, does that make them inherently bad, absolutely not. In wake county there are not necessarily neighborhood schools because we follow the no child left behind policy, which means that schools are assigned with a base population that takes into consideration the socioeconomic status of the students (only 30 percent of students in the each school are suppose to be on free or reduced lunch). Does that happen at all schools, no, but is it the goal, yes. So, as the population increases and housing becomes more expensive, then the "base" population changes and the reassignments happen.
10 years ago this wasn't as much of a problem because the population was not changing so drastically every year. There are certain parts of the county where changes happen more frequently (southern wake county) because the population is changing more rapidly than other parts of the county.
Would I want neighborhood schools, no probably not. I have done much research with the charlotte area schools that went from our system to neighborhood schools ( i have a good friend who teaches there) and the schools have become the schools of the have and the have nots. At least in wake county there is an attempt for socioeconomic diversity.
Okay, I am off of my soapbox. It is just not a very cut and dry situation and wake county schools get knocked a lot because of the all of the changes/reassignments yet, overall, it is a very good system.
Johnston county schools are not going through the same type of reassignment issues. Clayton, specifically, is growing like crazy, so who knows what it will be like in 5 years.
