Just moved into a home in Cary. Two story house. There is a cat5 outlet downstairs, and a cat5 outlet upstairs. Assuming they are connected to each other. However, I cannot get them to work. Getting no signal from either end. I need to find someone who does home network wiring installation. Please direct message me with recommendations on who to hire for this type of work in Cary.
The Cat5 runs are most likely not connected to each other but terminate at some central point (Cat5 is generally wired in a "star" config).
Do you have a place where the outside services (phone, cable, etc) enter the house? That would be the mostly likely place to look.

I have something similar. There is a box in the garage where all the cables come out and were fortunately labelled with room names. And there are 3 switches (hub?).
Purchase and configure securely, a wireless router and skip the CAT5. Until your internet speeds exceed 56 mbps, you're probably going to be OK.
While wireless will likely work fine in most locations for most applications, I try to use wired connections where I can - our TV, Blu-Ray, printer, PlayStation and network drive are all connected via ethernet for a more stable connection and streaming.
I have a related question.. I think my home phone and network are running on the same CAT5 lines and hence I am seeing strange issues when either stops working periodically. Can they coexist on the same CAT5 network?
Same question. I have a wiring cabinet inside but nothing is marked. Arggg..
Easy enough to trace wires, he could buy a "tone generator" for $30 or rig something as simple as a battery and volt meter. The tone generator is easier ...
I purchased a similar one at Intrex Computers for less.
If you can find a Radio Shack, you might get one there.
