School districts here are, for the most part, county based. So all of Wake County is one school district. Same for Durham County. Within Orange County, there is a separate school district for the towns of Chapel Hill and Carrboro.
NC schools are (mostly) county-wide, so there are Durham county schools, Wake county schools, Orange county schools, and one of the very few exceptions in the state (that's not a whole county), Chapel Hill/Carrboro. I see you're in NJ, where every little town has a separate district, school board, etc. Not so in NC.
Chapel Hill/Carrboro are seen as the best school district in the Triangle and in NC as a whole, largely because of the very affluent and educated populace it draws from (the university).
There are lots and lots and lots of threads in this forum about schools and school districts, if you search, but just know that all of Wake county (Raleigh/Cary etc--I'll leave it to you to get a map) is one district with over 150,000 students. Durham county is another school district, etc. You might go to the individual counties' websites to read more about them.
Several transplants from NJ got elected to the school board for Wake County and tried to create here the setup they had in NJ.
After many demonstrations, these bigots were sent packing.
Schools pay teachers very poorly and are suffering quite a few losses of experienced educators.
Some schools are excellent but suffering with overloads of students.
There are a few charters and faith based schools to consider. The higher end private schools charge as much as university tuition.
