I really like the triangle, raleigh area. Keep looking for jobs online (craigslist, monster, etc) but I haven't found anything worthwhile.

My wife is a nurse making $38/hr here in NJ, I make 80k year in marketing and communications. The closest thing I see down there pays $20/hr for her, and $40k year for me. I know cost of living is less..but to make a combined 80k/year is just not going to happen.

Anyone have any job hunting tips for people in white collar and medical professions???

I can only presume things will get worse as more professionals move down in search of the promised land.

Here is a list of RTP companies. You can contact the human resource dept directly of these companies.

Not sure if any of these are a fit for you, but I thought I'd send it along.

I think the last two words of your first post give a clue to what's going on here...everyone THINKS this is the "promised land". In actuality, it isn't. We have a decent job market...but not for all fields obviously! If you were into biotech or pharmaceuticals, you'd probably find one easily. Teaching too....they're constantly needing those here. Doctors are in demand as well.

Marketing? Not exactly a hotbed of activity around here....sorry.

Your wife being a nurse should find tons of openings, but yeah, you can see why there are many openings: they're not being paid enough.

And yeah, cost of living here may be lower....but you're beginning to see why: lower salaries.

Thanks Debbie, I appreciate the info. Rob, Im beginning to see what you mean. Even the biotech and pharm industries there pay around half of what people make in other regions. I can only see wages remaining flat and costs of living going up if more people keep moving to the area (larger labor pool=decreased salary+ more people looking for housing=increased housing costs).

RPT is nice an all, but what, if anything, is the city doing to attract new business to the area..or has the growth pretty much stopped in Raleigh. (not housing growth..job growth).

RaleighRob,
Thanks for confirming what we already know, my hubby is a biotech guy and I'm a teacher, however, trying to find a job from out of state seems impossible (for him at least, I'm not actively looking since I'm 8 1/2 months pregnant). Any tips on how to break in? I know we will end up in NC, hopefully sooner rather than later, our situation requires that something need to happen soon.

Is it unreasonable to commute for work to Durham from North Raleigh or Cary area?

I can't imagine a nursing position only paying $20.00 considering the demand. When I was at Moses Cone hospital (in Greensboro) a couple of months ago the pay for nursing jobs on the board there started at $30.00 and there were tons of them!

Where in Durham? If you're looking at RTP, people do it all the time. If you're looking at something near the university, then maybe from the Brier Creek or Leesville part of North Raleigh, or from the Cary/Morrisville area (something like Amberly might work).
If you're going into north Durham, I think you'd be able to do it from North Raleigh and "get around" some of the RTP commuters, but from Cary, I just don't see how you can avoid having to come up through RTP traffic, University traffic, and then through regular Durham traffic... But then again, I haven't tried that drive during rush hour, and maybe when 55 is completed and 540 opens up, there may be more options. Definitely drive it a couple mornings and afternoons to get a feel for whether it's something you personally could handle.
