I recently moved to Durham..and I've been looking up some restaurants to go to. I've tried out yelp and pintrist but after taking a visit to Cookout it's been a big no no. What are some local favorites worth trying?
you can hit up Dos Perros, Monuts Donuts, Daisy Cakes, The Pit, Dashi, Geer Street Garden, Dame's Chicken & Waffles, Toast, Bull City Burger and Brewery, Mateo Bar de tapas, old havana sandwich shop, Kings Sandwich Shop, Cocoa Cinnamon, and slew of other places, and maybe you went on the wrong day, or maybe that particular cookout was off their game, but cookout is good for cheap quick eats, go to another one but yeah downtown has a lot of good places to eat, you should see a Indy Eats guide around downtown and inside area restaurants to get some good recommends.
Sorry, but how did you get the recommendation for cookout from Yelp? As the previous poster suggested, please give the family owned restaurants a go. Monuts is delicious. Eat BBQ? Go to QShack .

Yeah I don't understand that either.
My recommendations
Best Burger/Beer- Bull City Burgers and Brewery
Best "fancy" restaurant- Mateo's and Nana's
Best brunch spot- Parker and Otis
Best sandwich (and excellent soup)- Toast
Best cheap eats- La Superior Carniceria (tacos), Mami Nora's (peruvian rotisserie chicken)
All of those are fantastic local options, that should get you started.
