Does anybody know of any? I have a feeling the shelters and hospital would not want someone so young. They really are too old for most day camps and we need to find something to keep them from going brain dead in front of screens all summer.

Nursing homes will take volunteer of that age. I know the one on Culbreth Road does. They can play games with the residents or if they know knitting or crocheting, they can help residents to do so or teach them how.
Do the libraries in Chapel Hill have a reading buddies program and does it run over the summer? Sometimes the parks departments will take volunteers but I have no idea what the age requirements would be. Michgc's suggestion is great too.
