I know there's a few threads on this topic, but at least 5+ years old. I'm curious about the pay, specifically Duke, of an RN with 5+ years experience. I know the cost of living is cheaper in the south as opposed to PA, but I haven't been able to find any concrete numbers.

are you talking about nurse practitioner or nursing?
$26 per hour for 5 years experience. All the hospitals in the area pay the same except for the Durham VA. They pay more, but it's very hard to get a job there. The $26/hr doesn't include shift differential.
Apparently. Everyone says the cost of living is cheaper then the northeast, but that still isn't going to change my everyday bills. Possibly the only thing that would change is cheaper rent. However, there are some pretty significant shift differentials, in upwards of $8.50/hr for weekend nights, with the lowest being $3.50/hr extra after 3pm. So it's a toss up. I feel like part of it is that you're "paying" to work for such a big name hospital system.
The cost of living can be high especially around Chapel Hill and Wake County. You could live in Mebane, Hillsborough, or Durham if working at Duke. Those would be affordable places to live. All the hospitals pay the same in the area except for the VA. If you want a great deal, move to Greenville, SC. Prices are much cheaper than here and the nurse pay is the same. It's a beautiful area there as well.
