My family (including my husband, two children and myself) is moving to Chapel Hill this summer from Southern California. We've decided to rent until we're familiar with the various neighborhoods. Does anyone have a recommendation for a local real estate agent?
I want the kids to go to either Smith or Phillips Middle Schools (though I believe admission to Smith is currently frozen) and eventually feed into East Chapel Hill High School. I want a home that doesn't cater to college students and is located in a family friendly neighborhood where we can live for up to two years. We have a German Shepherd so we need a property that accepts dogs. If you know of any properties that fit this bill, please let me know. Alternatively, I'm looking for a referrals to great real estate agents to assist in our search from afar.
Unfortunately, most agents do not handle rentals since there's little to be made there.
Yep. Gotta agree. Try Craigslist (but be careful), realtor.com and VRBO.com (and ask for a BIG discount for a one year lease, knowing that many vrbo owners will not consider long term rentals).
Your employer may have additional suggestions. Ultimately, you have to realize that you will probably have to open up your requirements a bit - or consider buying (though I personally think that would be a mistake).
The GSD is not going to be an easy thing for any landlord to accept. Besides the obvious concerns about damage (especially with such a large, high shedding dog), too many insurance companies have declared them a dangerous breed, and they will cancel the landlord's insurance. I'm not saying this is right OR fair. Nor am I saying you should get rid of the dog! But requiring certain schools AND the dog may be one requirement too many.
Another alternative is to bite the bullet and rent an apartment for six months. There are some (not many) apartments that will take the dog (don't know the CH area, so I can't help you). Accept that you will be unhappy living in that place for those six months. And work your butts off to figure out where you want to live and find a house in those six months.
Try Acorn + Oak Property Management - they usually have some properties in the Carrboro-Chapel Hill area. I didn't end up renting from them since I decided on another place in Raleigh but they're pet friendly and people have overall said good things about working with them.
Being a university heavy area, there are lots of faculty in Chapel Hill and Durham that go on sabbatical. Look up home rentals/swaps for sabbatical. There are several available for at least a year. Some are not pet friendly but some are negotiable.

That's a great idea - though normally they are looking for a home exchange - but still, it's worth researching. I've looked at one of those sites for long term home exchanges, but never actually joined as we belong to several other home exchange sites.
I don't think it will be a problem to find a rental that will take your dog. There are plenty of dog-friendly neighborhoods. Back in the day when we rented we always had dogs and had no problem finding rentals.
There are students throughout Chapel Hill and Carrboro, but the closer to UNC you go the higher the concentration of students.
Have you googled "Chapel Hill rentals"? That should get you several hits worth exploring and there are several different firms who handle rentals in Chapel Hill. I think the Chapel Hill rental market is pretty different from the Raleigh/Cary markets.
Chapel hill and carrboro is dog friendly community. Wherever you live you will be able to take your dog for trail walk or dog parks.
