My high speed internet bill is $54 a month through AT&T, which I think is outrageous. I live in an apt, have one computer and cannot believe the cost! Can anyone recommend a less expensive company?

That would depend on your definition of high speed, and your location.

Negotiate your internet bill. Try and get a deal with Time Warner Cable or whoever else provides internet in your area and then use that to leverage against AT&T and see if they will give you a price cut (or else you might leave)

$54/month for Internet is not outrageous. That is approximately what we pay through TWC for the 30mbps upgrade. While we loathe TWC as a company, we don't really have any other options and can't complain much about the actual service. I think they have a $15/month option but the speed is only 3mbps. Fine if all you do is email and surf the web, but probably wouldn't be good enough for streaming video. By the way, the number of computers you have connected in the home usually has nothing to do with the price, what you pay for is speed and bandwidth.

Earthlink is $29 per month for the first 6 months for 15Mbps download 1Mbps upload. This is plenty fast for email and web browsing. Once that promotion ends, you can switch to Time Warner Cable and get on their promotion for $34.95 a month for a year.

Are you paying for wifi now? If so, its a complete scam... you can buy your own router for a fraction of what companies charge for theirs and for "wifi service".

This suggestion is your best answer. TWC via Earthlink will give you faster service at a better price than AT&T DSL would. Good luck.
