I moved to Raleigh not that long ago so I'm not exactly familiar with everything yet. I know where I would live as a young professional but I know someone moving to Raleigh to attend graduate school at NC State in the fall. Where would be the best place for her to look for housing or apartments? Her only requirement is that she doesn't want to live in the middle of nowhere and wants to live somewhere where she can go out and meet people easily (aka a busy area where she can be social and active). I asked her about her budget and she said she didn't have one. I was thinking maybe Cameron Village or Glenwood South? I told her I live in North Hills and while that isn't too far from NC State, I'm not sure if that's the best place for a NC State student? Any suggestions for apartments or places to find listings?
There are lots of apartment buildings south of campus where many NCSU students live. They are pretty safe and close to groceries, not too far from the fun of downtown Raleigh. Some are around the Tryon Road/Trailwood/Lake Wheeler Road area. There's a couple of new modern apt. complexes closer to Lake Wheeler Rd. but I don't know the names. Try googling. Good luck to your friend!
This is one of the newer places near NC State. The University Apartments near Lineberry Rd. and Trailwood. Looks very nice and caters to students, so it would be easy for your friend to meet new people.
There are a bunch of (expensive) apartment complexes in those areas but where should someone look if they want to rent a house or an apartment not in a apartment complex?
There are a lot of rental houses (that rent rooms) in Cameron Park, between Cameron Village and Hillsborough St. There are also some tiny little apartments off Ashe Ave that would be good for one person and are kind of centered between NCSU, Cameron Village, and downtown.
She also might ask her graduate department (to be) if they have a roommate matching service or suggestions as to where people usually live.

Rhyne, Prentiss, York, VG Murray are the predominant property management services I see in that area (I live off of Glenwood across from F. Fletcher Park.)

Those things are still to be found in Cameron Village and Glenwood South as well as in other downtown neighborhoods such as Boylan Heights. The main difference as these types of rentals don't need to advertise much because they're in high demand. I lived in a four-unit apartment building off Glenwood South for five years, and the only way the landlord advertised was with a sign out front. She usually had the place rented within a few days.
My best advice is to simply drive around the areas of interest looking for signs. Also check craigslist.
If I was a grad student, I'd personally avoid the complexes south of campus because there are a lot of undergrads. But that's just my personal preference.
I'd check out the Cameron Village area. If she's not looking for a big apartment complex, it's probably best to drive around and look for signs.
It's been several years, but I used to rent in that area and had a lot of friends that did, too. Clark Ave, Grant Ave, Van Dyke Ave, Stafford Ave, Medlin Dr all had apartments that weren't big complexes.
Raleigh Towne Apartments might be worth checking out, too. Great location at Wade/Glenwood. Raleigh Towne Apartments
I was in that area today and saw some For Rent signs from the Preiss Company.
