Thanks for all of the comments. I do see new residential developments popping up here & there in the alternate route(s) projected space (within the last 2 years).

That is because nobody believes they are going to use the alternative routes. They only delayed and created those to appease the environmentalists. The original route is still the most likely for the reason you just said. It would cost to much to buy out all those neighborhoods.

Yep I don't know anything about the environmental side but I'm sure they have to look at other alternatives to show the environmentalists they have considered alternatives to potential problems that they might encounter (and why the alternatives may not be feasible)

I suppose if some of the land gets developed, they can just acquire the adjacent parcels and use the treat of eminent domain to get it cheap.

You can sell the property, or petition to have the dot purchase it. If they decline to purchase then you are free and clear to do whatever you want with it.

That's certainly not the story that has been running for a few years in news reports. Now, the media of course will push whatever angle they think will get viewers/readers but I wonder if it's alsoa. Case of the way the law appears to read versus the reality that DOT implements.

It wouldn't necessarily be cheap. They have to pay market value.
