Any plans for HW-55 expansion? (Apex, Angier: chapel, live, train)

I was curious if anyone has heard of plans to widen 55 between Olive Chapel Road and Apex Peakway (The one as you go towards Highway 1) in Apex. Between those two points, the road narrows to one lane each way and appears to be a major bottle neck for the area.

I suspect there may be some issues that are delaying such an expansion. One I noticed is the road goes under a train bridge, and there are probably complications to expanding that bridge. (It certainly is in need of an upgrade as it appears to be falling apart). I also suspect land owners along that section of the road might not want to sell, but this is usually where eminent domain comes in to play.

Just curious if anyone has heard anything, or if there is history with this section of road as I am a newcomer

The cant mess with the railroad bridge that crosses 55 right at salem st.

It has been talked about and is still under consideration...it's called Project "Apex 2" on that document. Looks like there are a lot of higher-priority projects on the table though.

I don't think it will happen any time soon - the question has come up a few times on an Apex message board I used to frequent. Hopefully once 540 is done a lot of traffic will be diverted off 55. I don't know how people can stand to sit in that traffic ever day - not my cup of tea for sure!
