Sometimes our local shops have killer sales. A few years back I picked up a NEW Trek aluminum framed mountain bike with front shocks for something like $180 or $190. Since my only other bike was chrome-moly, no shocks, and made in 1988...well, I was happy, for a relatively small outlay! (Ignoring all the feature stuff, like which group, etc.) It probably had not sold because of the color or something, which is generally of no consequence to me. The only additional money I spent was for a water bottle cage, and THAT came out of the sale pile

Topical topic!

I'm going to sell my nearly brand new Specialized Vita Comp Hybrid (size: XS) purchased just last year and I'll probably try to list it on Craigslist and then arrange to meet interested buyers in the parking lot of the Cary Police Dept, for my safety.

I've got the men's version of that bike (Specialized Sirrus Comp) and it is a really nice bike.

Another bike topic question - I'm thinking about upgrading and getting a nicer $1000 road bike. Is bike theft a problem in Raleigh if I wanted to go to the store or downtown? I know it is in some major cities so I'm not sure how it is in Raleigh (I have a solid u-lock and lock it up properly)[/

Bike theft is a problem wherever there are bikes and people who want to steal them.

Always, always lock up your bike and optimally use 2 methods so that the frame of your bike is secure to an unmovable object, like a lampost, and the wheels of your bike are locked as well so your tires aren't stolen. I use a Kryptonite Ulock and a 4ft Kryptonite cable, which I put through the wheels and seat. Take off anything that someone can steal like a bag or whatever. Try to park in very well-lit and well-traveled areas. There are no guarantees, only deterrents, so make your bike a hassle to steal so a thief will deem your locked bike not worth his/her time and move on to someone else instead.

If you own an expensive bike (say over $2k or $3K) then look into separate insurance for that bike (something like velosurance), which covers not only the full bike replacement cost but will also protect you as well against property damage, liability, etc.

I store my bike inside my house where it is protected from the elements as well as potential theft. And I never leave my house unlocked.
