Consider volunteering at Sarah P. Duke Gardens in Durham. You could lead tours (docent training starts next month; I know you won't be here yet, but in case others are interested), or be a "garden ambassador" (walking the grounds), teach a class, help with an event or greet visitors at the front desk for a few hours weekly.

I just saw the following notice that Yates Mill is looking for volunteers. If you like to dress up in colonial garb and take people on tours of an old grist mill, that may be right up your alley.

When touring a few elementary schools here in Durham, they all commented on how they love having volunteers from community. Get in touch with your local Durham public schools!
You might consider a service organization that works in multiple ways in the community so that you could enjoy a variety of activities while establishing relationships with a group of like-minded people. Civitan Int'l is a good example...www.civitan.com.

There are so many opportunities to volunteer, it really depends on where your interests lie. Love animals? Try the SPCA. Love kids? There are always children's groups needing people to help out. Like the arts? Contact the Durham Arts Council downtown and ask about the many groups in their network. Want to help people affected by the economy? Contact local soup kitchens, social services, or other such groups. Duke hospital can surely connect you with hospice groups or others who need people.
There is no shortage of places that could use you, that's for sure!
You can always volunteer with the Red Cross. I started out volunteering and eventually worked my way up through the paid positions. You can either volunteer as a local Red Cross worker helping out at fires and shelter work, during disasters or you can volunteer as as Disaster Services worker and go out on national disasters and help. Depending on your interests there are many options, from driving and serving meals from the IRVs (the red and white Red Cross trucks), working with families doing case work, damage assessment. There are many avenues depending on your skills and interests. If you opt for national disasters you will be asked to commit for 2 to 3 weeks at a time. If they are going to pay for your room, board and transportation, they generally expect you to stay for 3 weeks.
Thanks everyone for the great suggestions. I thought we might become bored in retirement, but now maybe not. If any people have other ideas for places to volunteer around the Durham area please let me know. Each an every one will be prayfully considered.
Independent Animal Rescue in Durham always needs foster homes for cats that were rescued until they find their forever homes. If you are not interested in fostering, there are other ways IAR could use help for even just a couple of hours a week
