Okay, I know this is really stupid of me but I've lived here for almost five years and I still haven't switched my NY driver's license to a NC driver's license. My husband switched his license within a few weeks of moving here and our cars are registered and insured in NC. My NY license expires in 2017 but I realize I still should have switched it. So my question is what will happen when I go to the DMV? I could say I haven't been driving but, of course, that would sound really stupid. I've had my license for over 30 years and have never gotten a ticket or been in an accident. I did have to show my license a few years after moving here at one of those drinking roadblocks where everyone driving on the road get stopped. I was nervous the cop was going to say something about my NY address so I mumbled something about not having gotten around to changing it yet and he didn't care at all. He just waved me through. Does anyone know what I should expect at the DMV? I'd call the DMV and ask them directly but I'm nervous they'll ask for my name and since everyone has Caller ID now anyway, they'd know who I am without me telling them anyway.

just go and get it switched. they should not care how long you have lived here. You are supposed to switch within X amount of days or months, but really, how are they going to know? Look at your IRS records? if they ask just tell them you were living with relatives in NY and your husband was here.....I would be more worried about taking the test.

Didn't they do away with the written test requirement?

not sure. I've been here ten years. It was required when I moved here unless you had a CDL, then you were exempt.

I would just say you've maintained your NY residence since you moved and are now moving down here full time so this is the first you've bothered with it. I seriously doubt they will care that much about your answer if they even ask, just need something to check the box. I would not offer up any explanation unless asked.

I think they did, now that you mention it.

So, it has paid off for GPC as she no longer has to take the infernal sign test.

I think if you have a valid license from another state you do have to take the written test. A quick check of the DMV website will confirm.

I just got a NC license after moving here from VA. They do not ask you how long you have lived here, and there is no written test. Don't worry :-)

There is a written test and you need three forms of ID with your complete name, first, middle and last. No initials.

Been there done that in 2014.

In my humble opinion the whole licence things is a bit of a farce, maybe revenue generating? They won't ask or care is my guess.
I had to do test and driving test and the signs because of UK licence and really it was all just an admin exercise.
Just go and do it.
