I have painters coming to paint the interior of my house. I'm planning to go to work and leave the painters at the house to paint. Of course, I just spoke to my dad and he says "you're staying at home, right?"

What am I supposed to do--sit in a little corner, try to work on my laptop, and breathe in paint fumes?

What do other people do?

It's the first time that I've used this person, but he came recommended, has an established business, and feels trustworthy. It does make me a little uncomfortable leaving someone at my house, but it feels like it's part of the process. I have very little to take anyway.

I don't think it's unheard of to leave painters at your house unchaperoned. I've always been home when my house was being painted, but that's mainly because I have pets.

Personally, I wouldn't have workers in my home without being there, but that's just me. Are they painting the whole house in one day? Can they sequence the rooms in such a way where you're working at your desk until they need to get in the office, then you can move to another room (dining room? kitchen) to stay out of their way?

Really, it is common to leave.

Valuables, prescription drugs, and guns secured or removed from the house would be wise.

If you hire a well respected local company I see no reason why a lock box would not work.

If this guy was routinely stealing from people who would be out of business. Like Mike said, lock up your valuables or take stuff with you.

I guess your dad is more comfortable with you staying home alone with a man or men you don't know?

I guess it would depend on where you got this painter? Was he referred to you? Insured and bonded?

I had ceilings and trim re-painted in my house a few months ago. Painter was referred to me and I felt comfortable leaving him here while I was out of the house.

There were a couple of days that I was at home, working on laptop.

I had no issues. I also leave my cleaning ladies. Knock on wood...no issues!

I would stay however, I do not have to leave the house because I do not work outside of our home and I mainly stay on the enclosed porch anyway but even if things were different I do not like anyone in our home who I do not know well.

I had a friend where I grew up that was with a reputable plumbing company. First thing they would do in a house was hit the medicine cabinet. They only took enough where it would probably not be noticed.
