Whenever I try to follow a link to the N&O (our local newspaper) there is a pop-up that prevents reading the article. It says to pay 99 cents to sign up for a subscription. Is this legit? Is it a one time sign up fee, or is it something that will repeat per link, per day, per month? The pop-up link doesn't say other than that their clients have different set-ups.

So, if that is bogus, or if I don't want to give my credit card info out for a 99 cent charge, what alternative news sources (online) do you guys follow?

I had a similar problem on Firefox a while back, but Safari allowed me to connect without any problems. I tried deleting all of the cookies associated with the N&O but that didn't help. Due to another issue I ended up deleting and recreating my Firefox user profile, and after that I was again able to connect to their site and read stories. I suspect it was due to a cookie that was associated with a domain not identifiable as the N&O.

I think the N&O only allows you to view "X" numbers of articles online per month without subscribing. Perhaps you've reached your monthly maximum views?

You do get online access with a paper subscription. I figure it's a good investment. There is local content you won't find
elsewhere. At least until the local TV news producers read it.

It's called a "paywall," and it's very typical of newspapers.

You are paying extra for that. When I called to complain about my last renewal price, they did give me a lower price, but removed on-line access.

I get the Sunday print edition only and that gets me the electronic edition for all week.

We do the same for the New York Times.
