My 8 year old boy likes to play ice and inline hockey and we've registered him in the Cary Ice House as well as Dreamsports in Apex. He's making very slow progress. I feel 1 or 2 hours a week is just not enough for him to improve his game. We live in West Cary and is wondering if there're any kids in his age group playing inline hockey regularly in the neighborhood.

thanks.

We have a group of boys who play inline hockey in a cul-de-sac in our neighborhood but we are down in South Cary in Lochmere Highlands. Is your son more interested in ice or inline? My older son is more into ice and he loves to go to all the pick-up games, stick and puck and other offerings that the Cary Ice House has. You should definitely check out their schedule as you can really get a lot of on-ice hours in during the week in addition to the "Learn to Play" weekend classes which I'm sure your son is already involved with. My son is on the house league at the Cary Ice House and absolutely LOVES it. They run such fantastic programs there, I just can't say enough about the people who work there. I know it's not the most up to date, modernized place, but that kind of adds to its charm

haha...wow.

I came here to say that the neighborhood kids would play inline hockey when I was in middle school and lived in Lochmere Highlands in Cary! This was in the late 90s/early 2000's

I guess the tradition lives on!

Thanks for all the responses. I checked on the map that Lochmere Highlands is over 20 min drive from where we live, about the same distance to Polar Ice House. Wish it would be closer.

To LeeLee, my son likes ice hockey but just got involved in inline, and he doesn't mind playing inline. The reason I got him involved is it's hard to get extra ice time outside of the class. He just finished Learn to Play II and he'll have to continue with another session Learn to Play. I would like to see him in the house league soon but he just doesn't make that much of progress. I sometimes play with him in the cul-de-sac close to where we live, so he can practice his skating skills. But I really wish there's other kids that he can play with. We live in a neighborhood where East Indians are dominant in number. No kids in our neighborhood really play this.

I will check out the weekday games in Polar Ice House. Thanks.

We are in West Cary and my kids (8 and 10)play street hockey quite a lot. Usually they play without their inline skates, but they sometimes play on skates as well. Here are a few other ideas for more ice time. Look into camps and clinics, check out Prime Time hockey (it's in Wake Forest, but if your kid is serious about hockey you'll have to get used to driving). My 8 year old is playing with the Carolina Lightening mites program in the fall. It's more expensive but it's a LOT more ice time than the polar house league. Its being run by Coach Greg, who you probably know from the learn to play program at Cary. It's something you might want to consider. Feel free to PM me. I spend way too much time at the local hockey rinks!

It isn't. Enroll him in a hockey camp this summer where he has an hour and a half of ice time three to five days for a week or two.

Also, Polar Ice House has 2.5 hours of open skate time every day, from 12:30-2:45. It isn't hockey, but it is ice time to get more proficient as a skater. You can work on starts and stops, backwards skating, etc...

Thanks for response and suggestion by jonov, mb1972. Raleigh Lightening seems to be a better program, but it's just too far from us. I will consider the summer camp and public skating during the day.
