We moved to the Triangle in the Spring of 2002 from suburban DC (northern VA). At the time, we had a 6 and 18 month old, and schools were of paramount importance to us. Although Cary will be very familiar to anyone relocating from the NE, my recommendation is to look at Chapel Hill, as the public schools there are superior to anything you'll find in the Triangle. We lived in a neotraditional neighborhood called Southern Village. We paid 500k for a custom home (approx. 4400 finished sq ft) and sold it exactly 24 months later for 650k, as I was promoted/transferred out west. Wake County schools bus for demographic/socio-economic reasons. Keep in mind that if you move to Raleigh, your kids may never see the inside of the elementary school 3 blocks from your home.
^^ Southern Village is great. They have a website Southern Village School here is supposed to be really great.
