So after posting a few times in the past 10 months about our relocation we have finally made it. We have been here just over a week and are very excited to celebrate our very first 4 July.
So just wanted some local info, we have a hire car provided by my husbands work but will need to but 2 cars in the next few weeks. So where is good for used cars, is it necessary to go through a dealership or are private sellers ok?
Also any recommendations for hairdressers? I have long hair and normally have half head highlights and trim. Happened on the Aveda salon in University Mall but they seemed super disinterested, I waited ages for service.

Welcome! I don't know about the car stuff, but I would think some private sellers are ok, some maybe not.
For the hair, I got to Posh in Durham. several coworkers go there and we've all had good experiences with them (different stylists). I've tried other places in the area but have been going to Posh for about a year and am very happy with them.

It is not required to go thru a dealership, but it is a lot less risky. Dealers know how to handle all the paperwork, and they should guarantee that the car has a clear title and will pass inspection. With a private individual, you have no guarantees.
One thing to look out for is that the state has strict standards on tinted windows. You should not buy a car that has very dark tinted windows.
Big dealers can be exhausting though. There is a salesman, then his colleague, then his boss, then the manager, etc. all pushing to convince you. My suggestion is to go there in couples, never one person alone. A small dealer would be better in my opinion.
Are you a member of USAA? They have a used car buying service, Costco may as well. Otherwise, unless your an experienced car buyer, I'd be headed over to Carmax. Or leasing a vehicle, maybe.
Sounds like you are new to this country, and I would not sue craigslist if that is the case. Unless you are very savvy with car buying customs here it is best to use a dealer. You can run into titling issues if you go the private route.
