This post tells the story of a close friend who suffered similar back pain. He went to a chiropractor who administered TENS treatments. TENS = Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. Refer to:

Those TENS treatments helped a lot. Not 100% cure, but considerable relief. The treatments were expensive. Then he discovered that TENS units are available without prescription. He bought one from an on-line vendor for about the same cost as a single chiropractor appointment. It worked well and he was able to use it at times of his convenience (night and/or weekends).
