I have a need to go to a chiropractor for a lower back problem (I threw my back lifting a book box). I may need muscle relaxants and pain medications in addition to adjustments and/or massages. Do I need to go to my personal physician AND a chiropractor, or can I just go to a chiropractor? I live in Cary.

No. They can prescribe/sell nutritional supplements but cannot prescribe drugs. There is only 1 state in the country, New Mexico , that allows some prescribing privileges.

This post tells the story of a close friend who suffered similar back pain. He went to a chiropractor who administered TENS treatments. TENS = Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. Refer to: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transc...ve_stimulation

Those TENS treatments helped a lot. Not 100% cure, but considerable relief. The treatments were expensive. Then he discovered that TENS units are available without prescription. He bought one from an on-line vendor for about the same cost as a single chiropractor appointment. It worked well and he was able to use it at times of his convenience (night and/or weekends).

For sources, search Amazon or eBay for TENS. Good luck!
