If you'd also like a visual as to how much Cary Village Mall expanded to turn into Cary Towne Center, here's a good picture of the shear amount of construction that happened. The shaded areas are all addons to the original Cary Village Mall. An exception being that shaded bit at the bottom, which was supposed to be the location of a grocery store. At some point in the process (probably neighbor opposition) the developer actually flip-flopped the locations of the bank and grocery stores. They were originally supposed to be opposite of what they are today:
Surprised that there are no pictures anywhere...even google images.
I've only lived here 10 years but still enjoy taking a stroll back in time. Would have been cool to see. I also wanted to see the oak tree that was saved, that would be a sight.
They had checked with arborists and they had determined the tree was very close to the typical lifespan for a red oak and had some issues. The regrading would put it at like 25 feet above the surrounding parking lot. But, people complained mightility that they should save it so they did, putting it way up on an island by the food court parking area. It died after a few years and they had to cut it down. They eventually did remove the island as well.
I can't find any pictures either. I'll have to go to Google earth on a computer and see if it was still there and visible on the older satellite and aerial views. Only goes back to 1993 and some of those were pretty low res compared to today. I know it was there then, but it might be a blur.

I spent a lot of time at Time-Out, Logo Joe's, the Snack Shack/Peanut Shack (?) in the old middle food court, and some Far East store with ninja weapons and girl posters a few stores up from the old Time-Out.
I actually came here looking for the name of that old store. I remember it as Far East Bazaar.
