What do you know about geothermal heat pumps for the Triangle environment? Our conventional heat pump runs all the time the last few weeks, and it has been serviced. Are geothermal heat pumps legal in Cary? Since you have to have wells, I'd think they would not be allowed, but that's why I'm asking.
We have two GSHPs- the wells get registered with the State but most systems these days (ours included) are closed loop wells. The holes are grouted with a thermal grout to enhance heat transfer and prevent aquifer to aquifer water transfer. I have a neighbor with an older "pump and dump" so those have been done too.
Local ground water temps are 62F nominal - designs typically swing between 42F and 82F during the year. Our current water input temp is 68F, EER running near 30.
No strip heat required in our system, water temp bottomed at 41F last winter.
Fed tax credit 30%, State 35% (I believe scheduled to expire this year). Some limits on the State, but still significant money back.
Feel free to ask more .... the design is key, you must have a contractor who knows this stuff. Not many drillers certified either, but a couple of good ones locally.
At least one other frequent poster here has them too ...
