The City is hoping to address the traffic issue in the future. The Six Forks Corridor Study has proposed to add more traffic lanes on Six Forks from 440 to Lynn Road amongst other improvements like intersection redesign,traffic light timers, and bike lanes. I sat in on these meetings though and quite a few citizens were opposed to more lanes because they feared that it would somehow turn Six Forks into another Capital Blvd. You can't please everybody I guess.
Thank you, I figured there had to be some talk about traffic in this area especially with the new tower being built. Yes, I agree with you, you can't please everybody. Unfortunately, the unhappy ones are usually the most vocal.

It's going to be awfully hard to widen Six Forks Road much more without making some of the homeowners/businesses who live along the road very unhappy. There's definitely a need for an additional north-south arterial in Raleigh in between Glenwood and Capital but unfortunately there isn't so Six Forks Road and Falls of Neuse gets all the traffic (and North Hills doesn't help either)

It seemed to me like the timing of the lights was off when I was there. That at least does not require a ton of money to fix. I agree, that is going to be a difficult stretch of road to address.
I am on that stretch of road practically every day, either during lunch-ish hours or 4:30-6 pm.
there's more traffic now than there was 2 years ago, but there's a whole lot more cars on the east side of 6 Forks than before.
The worst part is the people exiting from the inner beltline that either a)don't seem to realize they have a whole mile before their dedicated lane ends at Rowan or b) are trying to get over ASAP instead of any smoothness to their lane changing to get to the Lassiter @ North Hills part. The lights are reasonably well, though certainly not perfectly timed.

I agree with at least that assessment, the signals are pretty well timed IMO - sure there could be some tweaks/better coordination but overall they're not the problem.
The 3rd lane ending at Rowan and people trying to get over at that point is a problem but there's not much you can do about that except widen the road and extend that lane through to before Millbrook where that extra right lane picks up. Not really much room to do any advance signing that the lane is ending (and people use that lane to take advantage to "jump the line" a little......I've been guilty of that a few times)
That also isn't the majority of the problem - even with that potential bottleneck, the road is still congested from the Rowan intersection north. The Six Forks & Millbrook and Six Forks & Newton Rd intersections seem to be the most congested ones during peak hours. Just a lot of cars for a road that clearly is reaching capacity pretty soon.

I wonder if the same people lamenting over traffic vote against light rail or increased mass transit. Just imagine you can relax from North Hills to 540 any hour of the day. Socialist nightmare right?

They could just do like they did on Wake Forest (aka Falls of Neuse south) and repaint the lanes to make it look like there are 3 lanes without doing any actual widening.
without 540, traffic from 440 going north on Creedmoor, 6 Forks, and Falls of Neuse would be murder by now.
Other than when Creedmoor was down a lane for the Millbrook/Creedmoor shopping, there's been heavy traffic for us, but NOTHING compared to other places. I've been on Charlotte roads off 77 on a Saturday that were as busy as ours at 5 pm (except Glenwood )
I came through at 6:00 tonight driving south on Six Forks from Lassiter Mill and continuing over the Beltline. Traffic traveling north on Six Forks was flowing good, and no long wait on the off ramp. I generally use the Six Forks South exit when going home or to the mall and use Ramblewood as a cut through to Lassiter Mill.
