Not to be a jerk but would love to avoid Brueggers or Dunkin Donuts etc as the answer here. What I'm looking for are real bagels - crispy "shell" on the outside, chewy on the inside, with that distinct good bagel flavor (ie not like biting into a chewy bland piece of bread). Manhattan Cafe in Cary was the best place we found in the area, head and shoulders above the others like NYBD, unfortunately they have closed.

Anyone have any recommendations as to where to get a good, real bagel that fits the description above, anywhere in the area?

I get mine over at the pizza place behind Wegmans.

I miss Manhattan Café. Feeling responsible for not giving them enough business.

One of my favorite posts here on CD was when NYC2RDU posted that when his NY friends come to visit, he goes to Bruegger's and gets bagels, then puts them in a plan brown bag and his friends are like "these are the best bagels ever!: LOL.

Sorry rory, I know that's not what you wanted to hear. What happened to Manhattan Cafe?

I always like it when Yankees move down here and stop whining about their bagels, North Carolina is a barbecue region not a bagel region. I wouldn't move to New York and whine that I couldn't find a good peach pie, why? Because New York is not Georgia, I knew that going in.

It's a bagel, a round piece of bread with a hole in the middle, I was born and raised in New York and you know where I got mine? Shop Rite, you toast it, butter or cream cheese it, and then you eat it as breakfast with a nice glass of orange juice, which is Florida, so don't complain if you cant find good oranges in North Carolina.

Bwahahaha....lol

Whole foods might surprise but I do like the NY Bagel on Tryon and Kildare.. It's in the HarrisTeeter shopping center along with the Wal Mart.

If you are located in southern wake county, Bagels+ might be worth a visit (I've not myself). They're located just off 55, north of Fuquay Varina.
